Fun things in the neighborhood

Hiking April 20-24

This week we get to learn about habitats and the nature found right in our backyard! Don't worry, there are lots of ways to do this, but I encourage you to find a way to learn something new about the world around you.

As always, you have several options.

1. Discover the vegetation in your backyard. Go around your backyard and try to learn the names of the plants, trees and flowers that you find there. You can even ask to help your parents out in maintaining the yard or making it look nice by mowing the grass, helping with the weeding or sweeping the porch. But get outside, learn about nature and help out your family! I'm sure your parents would appreciate it!

2. Walk around the neighborhood. Find new plants that you see in people's yards or in parks. I have discovered many herbs that I use in cooking just by walking around my neighborhood and paying attention to the plants I see. It can be quite fun to discover new plants and even forage for your own food! You can also learn the names of new flowers or trees, so I encourage you to pay more attention to details than you have before.

3. Trek around Wasatch Hollow. I discovered a beautiful new nature walk this week! It is in the Sugar House area, and has a park that connects to a series of small trails that follow a creek. It is a beautiful and peaceful area, but what makes it even better is that there are signs along the way that teach hikers about the area! They talk about the creek and the vegetation and can help us be more conscious of our environment. The link below will give you directions to the park, and I have included some photos of the area, so go check it out this week!
