Natural Creations

April 27-May 1

Have you ever made a creation from sticks or rocks?

Well last Wednesday was Earth day, and I think we should honor it by getting outside and making some fun things!

As always, you have options:

1. Find things in your own backyard to do or make. You can help your parents pick up around the yard, or plant in your garden, or make a cairn.

What's a cairn?

A cairn is a man- made mound of rough stones built as a memorial or landmark, typically on a hilltop or skyline. The word cairn comes from the Scottish Gaelic: càrn. Cairns have been and are used for a broad variety of purposes, from prehistoric times to the present. In modern times, cairns are often erected as landmarks, a use they have had since ancient times.

2. Gather materials on a walk around the neighborhood. As you go on a walk around your neighborhood, you could gather sticks to make a teepee or a little fairy garden with rocks and little sprigs of bushes. If you are careful and considerate of your neighbors and the plants, you may even be able to make a bouquet of wild flowers to take home!

3. Hike Neff's Canyon. This last week I hiked Neff's Canyon, and I saw so many cairns and wickiups!

What's a wickiup?

A wickiup is an American Indian hut made of brushwood or covered with mats. Any primitive hut of sticks can also be referred to as a wickiup.

It was fun to see so many creations out on the trails! Neff's Canyon is close by, and a fun out-and-back trail that let's you choose the distance you want to go and then turn around when you are done. It is an uphill hike, but it provides beautiful scenery and views. Go check out the wickiups, and maybe even build one of your own!

Here's the link to the trail:
